Mapping Archaeological Footwear

I created several interactive maps of archaeological shoe finds. One looks at “carbatina” type one-piece shoes from the Late Roman Iron Age and very early Medieval periods (c.300-600 CE) – before the turnshoe became widespread – and the other covers the Norse Sphere, c.700-1100 CE. Click the buttons below to view the maps and accompanying information.

To find out what sort of shoes a person living in a particular area might have worn, use the map to navigate to that region and click on the dots to see what styles of shoes have been found there. A pop-up will show the style name and basic cutting pattern (based on the classification system used by calceologist Marquita Volken), the location of the find, the approximate date range for the shoe style at that location, and an illustration showing an example of that style and pattern.
