Since 2018, I have enjoyed learning how to make pottery, shoes, purses, and sheathes based on archaeological finds across Europe. I’m particularly interested in the material culture of the various groups in continental Europe during the Migration Period – especially the Langobards, Franks, Alemanni, and Baiuvarii – as well as Vendel Sweden and early Anglian and Saxon Britain. I’ve made garments and accessories based on Viking Age finds as well, and will try just about anything once just to see how it’s done. As a reenactor based in Minnesota (USA), I portray Faraulf, a Langobard living in northern Italy around 600CE.

My intention is to make items using materials, tools, and techniques that are as close as possible to the way it would have been done in period, and it’s a learning process at every step. I expect this site will be a combination of link library, photo gallery, blog, and research dumping ground. If you have questions about any of the source materials or techniques, I’m always happy to answer them – I’m certainly no expert, but will share whatever I can.
